June 6, 1962 - EMITAPE E47052

EMITAPE E47052
June 6, 1962
6-8 PM
Recording Session*
EMI Studio 3
Job Number: #M172/2PMS

Data
Four songs were recorded on this reel: (The songs marked in Bold have been issued on both official releases and bootlegs, see "Sources" paragraph for more information on this)

According to John Barrett's Notes, this session was recorded onto a Twin Track Tape (Referred as 2T In Barrett's Notes), and onto a Delta Mono Reel (Referred as an uppercase delta symbol "Δ" in Barrett's Notes).

Recorded Songs:
  • "Besame Mucho" (Unknown Takes) [Twin Track]
  • "Love Me Do" (Unknown Takes) [Twin Track]
  • "P.S. I Love You" (Unknown Takes) [Twin Track]
  • "Ask Me Why" (Unknown Takes) [Twin Track]
According to Kevin Ryan, Delta Mono Mixes from Final Takes were cut from another tape and pasted to the Twin Track Reel, so, is likely that this resulted in the following songs being transferred to this reel.
  • "Besame Mucho" (Final Take) [Delta Mono Mix]
  • "Love Me Do" (Final Take) [Delta Mono Mix]
  • "P.S. I Love You" (Final Take) [Delta Mono Mix]
  • "Ask Me Why" (Final Take) [Delta Mono Mix]
I have said that both songs are available on bootlegs, but the truth is that we don't know if the songs were made from a Mono Mix from Twin Track, or if they were made using the Delta Mono Mix, (more on this later.)

Ron Richards was the producer for this session.

This tape doesn't exists anymore, and it is possible that it was destroyed in late 1962.

*There's a debate as to whether if this session was an audition, a test session or an actual recording session.

  • -Facts: According to John C. Winn's Book "Lifting Latches; The Beatles' Recorded Legacy, Volume 3: Inside The Beatles Vaults". A 7" Lacquer was cut from each song, An acetate was made from Love Me Do, so it's possible that these lacquers were use to make acetates.
  • -Speculation: We can find possible copies from this reel, or Mono Mixes made from Twin Track
I made a chart showing this idea

It's possible that a 2nd Gen Dub was used, or a copy that was seven generations apart from the E47052 Reel (The 7th Gen Dub)

Many people speculate about where and in what conditions the tape was found, however, no one knows what really happened.

According John C. Winn, a tape appeared in New York in 1981, containing the unlooped version

In July, 1984, Capitol Records contacted Allan Kozinn to write Session's LP liner notes. At that time, the project was called "1, 2, 3, 4!"

Kozinn was allowed to hear a cassette containing this mix.

This previously unbooted version was eventually released on three bootlegs.

This release, despite being a copy from sources 1 and 2, presents an EQ’d version, allowing us to hear a bit more of Paul's falsetto at the end.

The 1984 Sessions album was scheduled for release in time for the 1984 holiday season, but it was postponed to avoid competing with Paul's "Give My Regards to Broad Street" project.

Besame Mucho
Variation 2.0 & 2.1

On late 1964 Geoff Emerick was called to remix the whole LP, now called "Sessions", with a new release date on February 25 1985 (George's 42th Birhtday).

For Besame Mucho, Emerick "Looped 'n' Faded" the song ending, thus, removing Paul's falsetto

Sadly, on December 1984, Apple sued EMI, and once Apple got the hold of EMI's project, the other Beatles nixed the project.

In 1985, test pressing vinyl versions of Sessions were leaked, and that started everything.

According to Comprehensive Beatles, Besame Mucho on URT 1 sounds like it has "surface crud from ancient vinyl." I don't think it's surface noise, but rather distortion and harshness caused by sibilant consonants ("s", "z" & "sh"), the same thing is apparrent on "Unsurpassed Masters", though this was confirmed using dubiously sourced MP3. I will compare again using FLAC files from original CDs later.

Some Dutch collectors, related to the NEMS bootleg label, bought a 6 or 8-hour tape copy containing unreleased Beatles recordings, (Schubert/TSP originally bought a 1 hour-long tape copy).

In 1989, these, collectors went on to found the "Yellow Dog" label and released the bootleg "Unsurpassed Masters".  To learn more about how this unreleased recordings were leaked, I’d suggest reading John C. Winn's book "Lifting Latches", which you can buy from his website.

The "Unsurpassed Masters" series were very popular amongst Beatle collectors. And Besame Mucho was copied on many bootlegs, including:

Unfortunately, it was denoised to soften the song harshness.

Love Me Do.
Variation 1.0

-Tape: The tape containing Twin Track Recording Reels & Delta Mono Mixes doesn't exist anymore.

-1st Gen Copy.
  •   Facts: According John C. Winn's Book "Lifting Latches; The Beatles' Recorded Legacy, Volume 3: Inside The Beatles Vaults" A 7" Lacquer was cut from each song, An acetate was made from Love Me Do, so it's possible that these lacquers were use to make acetates.
  •   Speculation: We can find here possible copies from this reel, or Mono Mixes made from Twin Track.
Unlike "Besame Mucho", we can get a much clearer idea of the likely audio generation. If the song was mixed to mono from Twin Track tape, or a copy was made from the Delta Mono Mix, then we're dealing with 3rd generation audio. But if the lacquer/acetate was made from the Delta Mono Mix, then we're dealing with a 2nd Gen Audio.

I made a chart showing this idea.
Every Dub/Mix is a Generation apart from the tape.

Where in the world was the acetate found?, Well, most of the sources claim that it was found in George Martin's house by his wife, Judy Martin, whilst cleaning a closet.

There are no pictures of the acetate, but we do have audio, as the song debuted on an official release:

Miscellaneous

Recording Sheet from June 6, 1962 plus other dates
More recording sheets exist, but they are illegible and in low-resolution. Thus, I won't include these sheet here. However, you can find it in, Mark Lewisohn's book "Complete Beatles Chronicle"

There's also a copy of Pete Best's Musicians' Union Session Fees & Expenses payment card, but again, only in low-resolution. I won't include it here for the reasons previously mentioned, but you can find this in another Lewisohn book "The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions: The Complete Story of The Abbey Road Years 1962-1970"
